Alice and Hugo return from honeymoon, having been imprisoned for accidentally helping a drug smuggler. Alice is pregnant. Simon Horton has come to see Geraldine and they have great difficulty in spending time alone at the vicarage as different council members keep dropping by. Eventually Simon appears in a dressing gown and the villagers know he is sleeping with the vicar. However he does not commit and finishes with her. She considers resigning but everybody talks her out of it.

James Norton and Robson Green return as the unlikely 1950s crime fighting duo, Vicar Sidney Chambers and Police Inspector Geordie Keating, in the third series of Grantchester, produced by Kudos. The six-part series is based on The Grantchester Mysteries by James Runcie. Tessa Peake-Jones is back as Sidney’s sharp tongued housekeeper Mrs Maguire who keeps the vicar in check; Morven Christie reprises her role as Sidney’s forbidden lover Amanda; Al Weaver returns as the timid curate Leonard Finch; Kacey Ainsworth is back as Geordie’s long suffering wife Cathy, Lorne MacFadyen puts his police helmet back on to play DC Phil Wilkinson and Seline Hizli returns as the feisty police secretary Margaret. And of course it wouldn’t be Grantchester without the return of the gorgeous black Labrador Dickens.

A boisterous female minister comes to serve in an eccentricly conservative small town's church.

Geraldine turns down Owen's final pleas to marry him and the villagers' suggestion that she should have a sky-diving wedding,to get married to Harry. Alice is charged with being the wedding planner and she chooses a Doctor Who theme.After the Reverend Jeremy Ogilvy has conducted the ceremony and a montage of scenes from Geraldine's life has been shown Alice finally understands the vicar's closing joke,thanks to Harry.

Geraldine is at a loss for an interesting front page story for the parish newsletter. Alice and Hugo are a couple but Alice complains that Hugo has yet to kiss her so Geraldine urges her to take the initiative. As a result the couple are found,lying on a path having a kiss which lasts four hours. They can't stop kissing. Finally Hugo stands up to his hectoring father and announces that he and Alice are engaged to be married,giving the vicar her front page story. She herself,though,manages to talk her way out of Owen's proposal to her.

Christmas coincides with Geraldine's tenth year as vicar and David suggests she apply to be a bishop. A coincidental visit by Rachel Hunter leads Alice to believe that Geraldine is gay but plans go ahead for her to meet the Archbishop of Canterbury to discuss her promotion. At her party she dives into a chocolate fountain, emerging to meet the Archbishop. Sensing she has blown the promotion she gets drunk and delivers a bizarre midnight mass, whilst Jim's winning entry in a carol contest is similarly unusual.

Whilst Adam is conducting Ellie's wedding service Archdeacon Robert is delivering Alex's baby daughter in the back of a taxi. Ten months later Adam meets Yusef, the Muslim imam, in a dilapidated children's playground where he has taken baby Katie and they decide to join forces to raise money for its renovation. Yusef does very well, collecting most of the money - despite being electrocuted by the church's faulty wiring system. This is as well as most of Adam's funds come from Colin selling crack cocaine. Both Christians and Muslims, however, put the Smallbones under pressure to have Katie baptized.
